When you bring a reusable shopping bag to the Co-op you’re doing something really cool not only for our entire planet but for our community as well. The Co-op takes the money (a nickel) that we would have spent on a bag and gives it to a local non-profit. A token representing the nickel is a bean. A cashier will give you a bean for each reusable bag you use and you get to drop it in a jar of your choice representing one of three local charities.
We have paper bags, but Beans for Bags offers a fun incentive for reusable bags that fund some important programs.

Current Recipients: April – June 2018
- United Way of Clatsop County improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community, uniting funds through corporate sponsorship, employee-giving payroll deductions and special events including Iron Chef Goes Coastal and individual donations.
- CCA Regional Food Bank fights hunger in Clatsop County by distrubuting food to partner agencies as well as directly to clients. It was the first food bank in Oregon to create a mobile fresh produce pantry.
- Astoria Parks, Recreation and Community Foundation provides scholarships for individuals and families to access health and wellness opportunities including swimming at the Astoria Aquatic Center. Run on the River is one of several events the foundation hosts to raise proceeds.
Our Beans for Bags program started about two years ago and has incentivized the use of more than 100,000 bags. This has resulted in your co-op donating more than $5,000 to local charities.
